Completion of "Lone Wolf Marathon"
Sunday, October 26, 2008
Today is Jamie's (my wife's) birthday. So in honor of her 35th year upon sod, I have run a marathon in her honor. I won first place. Well, at least that is what I'm going to proclaim in the online blogosphere. True, I was the only registered racer, and I also had to supply my own water, fuel, and crowd support, but who cares about the details? The race just happened to start and end at my front door. Today was actually my scheduled long run. I went 26.2. Fun.
I started my personal marathon at 4:15 am, and ended at 9:28 am. 5 hours and 13 minutes. A pathetic marathon time, but this includes several pit stops, bathroom breaks, convenience store refueling, a brief conversation with the cashier Miklov about my strange shoes, and lots of cautious slow-paced highway shoulder running.
Right now, I sit Indian style on my sofa with my laptop recovering. I look at my freshly scraped and raw feet and force myself to slam another bottle of water. Why in the hell do I do this? What in God's name makes me tick? Why do I choose to forgo sleep, and beat myself for 3-5 hours each weekend? I must enjoy it.
My wreaking Vibrams, CamelBak, Garmin GPS, MP3 player, gel flask, hat, gloves, sunglasses are stinking up the garage right now with their vile sweaty odor. I'll deal with all that later.
We are preparing to take a long drive out to Pensacola to eat at "End of the Line" vegan cafe for Jamie's B-day, the one eatery in the area where the staff understands our set of vegan-lifestyle oddities.
Happy 35th Birthday Jamie! My Love!
