Sammy Wanjiru: Kenya's First Gold!
Sunday, August 24, 2008
2:06:32! That is the winning time of Sammy Wanjiru of Kenya. 21 years old, and he won Kenya's first gold in the Olympic Marathon! It was a fun race to watch. When they bolted off the start line, Sammy W. started with his 2:05 pace and held it to the end. The others kept up for a short while, but the lead pack started to thin out. I was rooting for Kenya the whole time, I must admit.
Ethiopia held in there for a long while, I was sad to see his teamate come up and pass him right at the very end and grab 3rd. You could see he didn't have any juice left.
What a great race to watch. Historic too. After all the races Kenya wins each year, they deserved to win the Olympic marathon. With such a great legacy as distance runners, it only seems fitting that they should take the gold.
